Cheaha Mountain, Alabama

Elevation 2,405 feet

Summit Date:  May 30, 1997

Thanks to a wooden way-side sign along State Route 281 announcing the location of Cheaha State Park we took a detour on our travels to check out this highpoint. Don't stop until you reach the observation tower. This excursion--an attempt to kill time--would soon become a "peak bagging" addiction.

  • Located in Cheaha State Park (established in 1933) the derivation of the highpoint's name is unknown. It is possible that it comes from the Choctaw Indian word chaha meaning "high".

  • Cheaha Mountain is located approximately 25 miles S of Anniston in the Cheaha State Park area of Talladega National Forest.  The entrance gate is open 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while the park is open year-round.  There is a $1.00 per person day use fee.
