Backbone Mountain, Maryland

Elevation 3,360 feet

Summit Date:  March 1, 1998

This trailhead was very difficult to find. We drove to West Virginia, and using a highway map tried to get close to the mountain. After some searching we finally came across some orange spray paint on a tree at the base of a fire road, and the message read: " MD»HP ".

We parked the car in a narrow roadside pull out and began walking. Initially the road was dry and steep. The higher we hiked the more narrow, wet and snow packed the trail became. However, by the time we reached the summit the snow had all burned off. There was no view, but a wonderful (and our first) metal marker/sign and a mailbox with a logbook and certificate of completion for highpointers to record their accomplishment on this particular mountain (a nice touch!).
