Mount Greylock, Massachusetts

Elevation 3,487 feet

Summit Date:  October 6, 2000

Fog, more fog, and Bascom Lodge.

From Pittsfield we drove on U.S. Hwy 7 for 5.9 miles to North Main Street.  Signs for Mt. Greylock State Reservation led us to Rockwell Road, and the 8 mile winding paved state road to the summit was easy for our Honda Accord.  The summit was desolate, and the fog didn't offer us any views, so we took our picture in front of the War Memorial Tower, and found refuge in Bascom Lodge---a rustic stone and wood building built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.  The lodge has been operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club since 1982 and offers accommodations for both vacationers and hikers.  Friday night music nights featuring local musicians, nature walks, and Tuesday barbecues make the lodge a social mecca.  We thought about staying but the fog was too depressing, so we pushed on to North Adams, headed for Vermont.
